Activity code: CRFD02

Duration: 10 Days

Explore the very best of the Croatian coast in just over a week, combining dramatic coastal scenery, charming towns, historic cities, idyllic islands and two of the country’s most celebrated national parks. This itinerary includes the impressive hitoric cities of Dubrovnik, Split & Zadar, a choice of Adriatic islands and the natural wonders of Plitvice Lakes offering a varied and enriching journey through Dalmatia.

Your adventure begins immediately upon arrival in Dubrovnik, with a short drive up the coast to Ston. Here you can stroll along the remarkable medieval walls and sample some of Croatia’s freshest oysters in the quaint harbour town. Alternatively, you may choose to head inland through southern Bosnia & Herzegovina, visiting Trebinje before continuing to Mostar. The UNESCO-listed bridge and atmospheric old town make an overnight stop here highly rewarding, either as an alternative to Ston or as an additional night on your route.

The driving distances are short each day, giving you plenty of time to pause for sightseeing, a leisurely lunch, or even a picnic amid the scenic landscapes. From Ston or Mostar, cross to Hvar Island for a night or two, enjoying the island’s spine road with its panoramic views and the charm of Hvar Town, with its hilltop fortress and elegant harbour. Return to the mainland at Split, where you can stay either in the historic centre or in nearby Trogir, connected by a short ferry, and soak up the Roman heritage, lively waterfronts, and the surrounding countryside.

Next, drive inland to Plitvice Lakes National Park for two nights, allowing at least a full day to explore the park’s iconic cascades, emerald pools, and forested walking trails. Afterwards, the itinerary leads to Zadar, a city that balances a rich history with innovative modern attractions, including waterfront art installations and charming streets to wander at leisure.

The final leg takes you south along the Dalmatian coast, with optional detours for rafting or the multi-zip-wire experience in the Cetina Valley, before reaching Dubrovnik for the last few nights. Here you can unwind, explore the UNESCO-listed old town, or take the cable car for panoramic views across the terracotta rooftops and the Adriatic.

For those with extra time, Montenegro is an easy addition, with the choice of staying in Budva with its tranquil old town, or Kotor, famed for its historic walls and the challenging climb to the fortress overlooking the bay. This itinerary combines coastal beauty, island charm, historic towns, and natural wonders into a truly memorable Adriatic journey.

Highlights

Itinerary

Arrive in Dubrovnik and collect your hire car directly at the airport. Rather than lingering in the city immediately, you set off on a short but rewarding drive for your first overnight stop.

If you choose Ston, the route follows the coast and across to the Pelješac Peninsula, arriving in time to sample the region’s renowned oysters and walk the impressive medieval walls, among the longest in Europe. Alternatively, drive inland into Bosnia & Herzegovina to Mostar, crossing the border soon after leaving Dubrovnik. An overnight stay allows time to explore the old town at a gentler pace, admire the reconstructed Stari Most bridge, and enjoy the evening atmosphere once day visitors have departed.

Continue north along the Adriatic, enjoying coastal views and quiet inland stretches (including a visit to the Zaostrog Monastery) before reaching the small port of Drvenik for the short ferry crossing to Hvar Island. Once ashore, a scenic drive along the spine of the island leads to Hvar Town, beautifully set around a natural harbour.

From Mostar you can drive back to the coast via possible sightseeing detours at Kravice Waterfalls, Pocitelj and Medugorje.

Depending on your preference, stay for one or two nights. Time here can be spent walking up to the hilltop fortress for panoramic views, relaxing by the sea, or taking a boat trip to the nearby Pakleni Islands. Despite its reputation, Hvar also offers quieter corners and refined dining, particularly in the evenings. Possible excursions from Hvar Town include the Pakleni Islands, the Blue Cave and a "Food & Wine Tour".

Recommended places to stay

Return to the mainland by ferry and continue to either Split or Trogir, both excellent bases and easily connected by local ferries across the bay. Split offers the remarkable experience of staying within and around Diocletian’s Palace, where Roman walls form part of everyday life, while Trogir is smaller and more intimate, with a beautifully preserved medieval core.

Day 4 is ideal for an unhurried exploration on foot, visiting museums, markets and waterfront promenades. Alternatively, you may like to join an optional excursion inland to the Cetina Valley, where rafting or a multi-zip-wire experience provides a striking contrast to the coast.

Drive directly inland along scenic route no.1, passing the historic towns of Sinj and Knin to arrive at the World-famous Plitvice Lakes National Park. You may also consider a detour into Bosnia & Herzegovina to visit the Una Valley Nature Park near Bihac.

Leave the coast behind and drive inland through changing landscapes to Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia’s most celebrated natural sight. A two-night stay ensures at least one full day to explore the wooden walkways that wind between turquoise lakes, waterfalls and forested paths.

Early starts or quieter routes reward you with a more peaceful experience, and there are several walking options depending on energy levels. The surrounding countryside is calm and rural, making this a refreshing contrast to the busier coastal towns. We recommend pre-booking your tickets to ensure entry at a time of your choosing; these can be included as part of your holiday.

Drive down to the coast via a choice of routes, such as Otocac, Senj & Paklenica or Gospic & Paklenica or maybe Gracac & Pag Island to Zadar, a compact historic town set on a peninsula. The old town is rich in Roman and medieval remains, but Zadar also offers contemporary features such as the Sea Organ and Sun Salutation, which come alive at sunset.

With just one night, the focus is on a relaxed wander through the old streets, a swim if weather permits, and dinner overlooking the water as the light fades over the islands.

More time in Zadar if required, including the nearby seaside town of Nin.

Then drive down the new highway and/or coast road all the way to Dubrovnik. We suggest breaking your journey at Makarska, Omis or Gradac and maybe doing some rafting or the zip-wire experience in the Cetina Valley if your schedule allows an extra night.

Drive south back to Dubrovnik, arriving for the final two nights of your holiday. Now free from the car, you can explore the city at leisure. Walk the full circuit of the city walls, take the cable car up Mount Srđ for sweeping views, or simply enjoy cafés, small museums and boat trips to nearby islands.

The final day is ideal for relaxed sightseeing, shopping or a farewell meal overlooking the Adriatic, bringing the journey full circle in one of Europe’s most striking historic cities.

Drop off car in Dubrovnik (we will collect it from your hotel).
