Croatia Self Drive 03 - Off the Beaten Track

Zagreb - Varazdin - Osijek - [Belgrade] - Zagreb [or Bosnia / Dubrovnik]

Summary

Venture beyond the familiar coastlines to uncover Croatia’s continental treasures. This self-drive journey takes you from Zagreb to Varaždin’s elegant baroque streets and Osijek’s historic Tvrđa, with the wetlands of Kopacki Rit offering a peaceful retreat into nature. Perfect for travellers seeking history, culture, and scenery away from the crowds, this itinerary reveals a side of Croatia often overlooked, yet rich in stories, architecture, and landscapes.

Activity code: CRFD03

Duration: 9 Days

Do not overlook Croatia’s continental heart, a region of varied landscapes, fascinating history, and cities less visited by the usual tourist routes. Depending on your flight schedule, you can start or finish in Zagreb, a compact and walkable capital with excellent public transport and an array of cultural sights. It is also possible to include a day trip to the world-famous Plitvice Lakes National Park before heading inland to explore the quieter, often overlooked corners of northern and eastern Croatia.

From Zagreb, your journey begins northwards to the charming university town of Varaždin, one of Croatia’s oldest settlements, even predating the capital. Situated on the southern bank of the River Drava and known as the “Northwest Gate of Croatia,” Varaždin boasts an elegant historic centre, tree-lined avenues, and several fine parks. Its baroque architecture and the stately castle offer a glimpse into the town’s period as the temporary capital of Croatia in the 18th century, while the lively student population gives the town a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere.

Heading east, the itinerary takes you to Osijek, the vibrant centre of the Slavonia region bordering Serbia. The city is divided into Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and Donji Grad (Lower Town), reflecting its layered history. The fortified Tvrđa district contains beautiful Baroque buildings and is a peaceful contrast to the bustling avenues of the 19th-century sections, lined with cafés, shops, and cultural venues. Just outside the city, the Kopacki Rit Nature Park offers one of Europe’s largest wetlands, a haven for birdlife and a striking landscape where the Drava and Danube rivers meet.

From Osijek, you may return directly to Zagreb along the highway, or extend your journey further. For those with more time, it is possible to continue south into Bosnia and Herzegovina via Sarajevo and Mostar, or even further to Dubrovnik, creating a grand tour through some of the Balkans’ most compelling and less-travelled landscapes. This itinerary highlights the rich history, natural beauty, and cultural depth of continental Croatia, rewarding those who wish to explore beyond the coast.

Highlights

Itinerary

Arrive at Zagreb Airport and transfer to your hotel. Spend your first afternoon and evening exploring the compact city centre on foot. Wander the cobbled streets of the Upper Town, admire the colourful rooftops, and visit landmarks such as the Cathedral, St. Mark’s Church, and the historic Market Hall. Take time to enjoy one of the many cafés or sample local delicacies, such as strukli, in a traditional restaurant.

Day 2 - Free day to explore Zagreb's historic sites, museums and much more.

Optional Tour: Zagreb Guided Sightseeing Tour - Zagreb grew up on two neighbouring hills: Kaptol - the centre of spiritual and religious life of north-western Croatia, and Gradec - the commercial centre of skillful tradesmen and craftsmen. Take a walk with your guide, visiting the Upper Town with its Gothic Cathedral, the beautiful and ornate St. Catherine’s church and the massive St. Mark’s church with its famous coloured-tiled roof. Continue to the mediaeval Stone Gate and “Dolac”, the open-air market.

Collect your hire car and head north to Varaždin, a baroque gem often called the “Little Vienna” of Croatia. The drive takes you through pleasant countryside and along the southern bank of the Drava River. In Varaždin, explore the elegant town centre, stroll the parks and squares, and visit the 17th-century castle, which houses art and historical exhibits. The town’s relaxed, student-friendly atmosphere is perfect for a gentle afternoon of wandering and soaking up local life.

** alternatively, you could detour south to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park and return to Zagreb, instead of the first night in Varazdin.

Two full days in northern Croatia. Sightseeing in Varazdin and local area, visiting places such as Trakoscan, Cakovec, Lepoglava and Belec in the Zagorje region. This is also an important wine-making region and is full of colourful Baroque buildings at every turn.

Drive east towards Osijek, the capital of Slavonia. Your route will take you through smaller towns and rural landscapes along the border with Hungary, rarely visited by tourists. On arrival, explore Osijek’s historic Tvrđa, the star-shaped fortified town with Baroque buildings and charming squares. Wander the tree-lined streets of Donji Grad and perhaps enjoy a riverside café along the Drava. The city’s history is palpable, from Habsburg influences to the more recent scars and reconstruction from the 1990s conflicts.

** You may also like to consider an extra night for a day trip or an extension of your holiday to enable you to visit Belgrade and/or Novi Sad in Serbia.

Recommended places to stay

Sightseeing in Osijek and the local area, such as Vinkovci, Vukovar, Dakova and Ilok. Also, we suggest visiting the National Parks of Kopaci Rit and Papuk.

Excursion to Kopački Rit
Spend a day discovering the Kopacki Rit Nature Park, one of Europe’s largest wetlands. Just a short drive from Osijek, the park offers walking trails and observation points to see diverse birdlife, tranquil rivers, and lush marshes. Guided boat tours can be arranged to explore deeper channels of this peaceful, remote environment.

Kopački Rit is a protected nature park, a wetland area that is home to rare birds, wild boar and deer; visitors can walk along old forest paths, to ride a boat along the wetland canals and to experience the unique beauty of untouched nature. This trip includes tickets to the nature park, panoramic sightseeing of a special zoo-reserve by boat, a walking tour along the boardwalks, a visit to the exhibition of flora and fauna in the wetland station of Kopački Rit and the chapel. The Nature Park provides an expert guide for the duration of this trip.

Begin your return journey to Zagreb, taking the scenic highway or exploring minor rural roads if you prefer to linger along the way. Stop at villages and market towns, such as Slavonski Brod, to experience local culture, sample regional food, and enjoy the quiet landscapes of continental Croatia.

Arrive in Zagreb in the late afternoon and spend your final evening revisiting any sights you missed on the first day or relaxing at your hotel.

Option 1 - a possible extension of this itinerary can be arranged by driving through northern Bosnia & Herzegovina, for example via Banja Luka and the Una Valley, to Plitvice National Park for a couple of nights prior to returing to Zagreb.

Option 2 - a second alternative would be to drive south through Bosnia & Herzegovina via Doboj, Sarajevo, Mostar and Trebinje en route to Dubrovnik which could be your final destination as there are lots of flight options and a straightforward drop off for your hire car [we suggest an extra 5 nights for this; 3 in Bosnia & 2 in Dubrovnik].
