This journey offers a rich blend of natural beauty, culture, and history, all at a relaxed pace.

Your holiday begins with a smooth transfer to your hotel in Zagreb, giving you time to explore the city’s elegant squares, historic streets, and riverside promenades. The following day, your hire car is delivered and you head into the countryside towards Plitvice Lakes. With drives kept short, you can fully enjoy the spectacular waterfalls, turquoise lakes, and forest trails, pausing for picnics or leisurely walks in this iconic National Park.

From Plitvice, continue south along scenic roads to Split, the Dalmatian coast’s historic heart. From here a short ferry takes you to Hvar Island, where the lively old town and hilltop fortress await. You can enjoy charming streets, waterfront cafés, and nearby coves, before a scenic drive along the island leads back to the mainland. Adventure options are plentiful here, from rafting to a multi-zip-wire experience in the Cetina Valley near Omis, with Split or Trogir providing the perfect overnight base.

The final leg takes you north to Zadar, whose compact old town is rich in history and character, complemented by innovative modern installations. After exploring the city and its surroundings, it’s a straightforward drive back to Zagreb Airport for your flight home.

Those wishing to extend the journey have plenty of options, including travelling further along the coast to Rijeka and Opatija, enjoying Istria, or adding island stops such as Pag, Rab, or Krk via short ferries or bridges.

This self-drive itinerary is ideal for travellers seeking a balance of culture, history, and scenic variety, all while enjoying the flexibility and freedom that comes with exploring Croatia by car.

Highlights

Itinerary

Arrive in Zagreb and transfer to your hotel. Spend the afternoon and evening exploring the capital on foot. Wander the charming streets of the Upper Town, discover historic squares, visit the Cathedral, and enjoy the cafes and galleries. Evening at leisure, perhaps sampling traditional Croatian cuisine in one of the city’s excellent restaurants.

Enjoy a relaxed morning in Zagreb, perhaps visiting the Dolac Market or the Museum of Broken Relationships. Later, collect your hire car and drive south via Karlovac and Rastoke toward Plitvice Lakes National Park (around 2–3 hours). Check into your hotel and take an evening stroll in the tranquil surroundings.

A full day to explore the national park using the transport options included in your entry ticket. Walk the network of boardwalks and trails over turquoise lakes and waterfalls, hike forest paths, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere around the impressive natural wonders. We recommend pre-booking your tickets to ensure entry at a time of your choosing; these can be included as part of your holiday.

Depart Plitvice and drive toward the coast via the historic towns of Knin and Sinj. Take a ferry to your chosen island, arriving in Hvar or Brač and spend the night on the island.

Recommended places to stay

Explore the charming town of Hvar, a stroll along the harbour or a walk up to the castle overlooking the town; alternatively simply relax in the island’s serene setting, such as at the spectacular Zlatni Rat beach in Bol. In the afternoon a scenic drive to the eastern port of your chosen island and a short ferry crossing back to the mainland. You may like to try the zip-wire experience at the stunning Cetina Valley near Omis if you have time and then on to Split or to nearby Trogir.

In Split, explore Diocletian’s Palace, the Roman ruins, and the vibrant Riva promenade. In Trogir, admire the medieval architecture, the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, and the small harbour. Nearby places of interest include the Roman ruins of Salona and the Kliss Fortress. Optional excursions include island trips, coastal boat tours, or visiting the Cetina Valley for rafting or the multi-zip-wire experience if not done on Day 5.

Drive northwest along the coast, stopping to visit the historic centre of Sibenik and/or the Krka National Park to admire the waterfalls. Continue to Zadar and check into your hotel. Explore the old town, including the Roman Forum, Sea Organ, and Sun Salutation, before enjoying a relaxed evening in this historic city.

After a leisurely morning in Zadar, drive back to Zagreb via the highway (approximately 3–4 hours). Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy a final stroll or coffee in the city before returning your car and departing.

Extend your trip with a few extra nights on one or more of the northern islands (Pag, Rab, Krk) or drive up coast road via Rijeka all the way to Istria (Opatija, Pula, Motovun) and then travel to Zagreb.
