If you want to experience the best of central Croatia without feeling rushed, this self-drive holiday is ideal. Starting and finishing at Split (or nearby Trogir), the itinerary blends vibrant coastal towns, stunning national parks, and charming inland villages, with manageable daily drives that allow plenty of time for sightseeing, relaxed lunches, and scenic detours. Extra nights can easily be added on an island of your choice, such as Brač, for a tranquil finale.
Your journey begins with two nights in Split or Trogir, giving you time to explore the historic streets, Roman and Venetian architecture, and the bustling waterfronts. From here, you head northwest along the coast via Sibenik and Krka National Park, where cascading waterfalls and lush trails offer a memorable pause, arriving for an overnight stay in Zadar. In Zadar, discover the Roman and Venetian heritage of the old town, stroll along the waterfront promenade, and enjoy modern installations such as the Sea Organ and Sun Salutation.
The drive to Plitvice is never demanding and allows time to stop along the way for walks, viewpoints or a leisurely lunch. A full day at the lakes reveals a remarkable series of turquoise pools, waterfalls and wooden walkways set within dense forest, perfect for exploring on foot or with gentle walks that suit all fitness levels – a true highlight of any visit to Croatia.
From Plitvice, the route leads south to Omis via the historic towns of Knin and Sinj, combining inland landscapes with rich heritage. The route ends in Omiš, set between the mountains and the sea at the mouth of the Cetina Valley. Those feeling active can enjoy rafting or the exhilarating zip-wire experience high above the gorge, while others may prefer a swim or a relaxed seaside lunch
Finally, return to Split for your departure, reflecting on a journey that has combined cultural towns, national parks, and the best of Croatia’s Adriatic coast. For those wishing to extend the holiday, a few nights on a nearby island such as Brač provide a peaceful seaside conclusion. Well balanced, unhurried and easily adapted, this central Croatia fly-drive offers a rewarding blend of coast, countryside and culture, and can be extended south to Dubrovnik if time allows.
