If you want to experience the best of central Croatia without feeling rushed, this self-drive holiday is ideal. Starting and finishing at Split (or nearby Trogir), the itinerary blends vibrant coastal towns, stunning national parks, and charming inland villages, with manageable daily drives that allow plenty of time for sightseeing, relaxed lunches, and scenic detours. Extra nights can easily be added on an island of your choice, such as Brač, for a tranquil finale.

Your journey begins with two nights in Split or Trogir, giving you time to explore the historic streets, Roman and Venetian architecture, and the bustling waterfronts. From here, you head northwest along the coast via Sibenik and Krka National Park, where cascading waterfalls and lush trails offer a memorable pause, arriving for an overnight stay in Zadar. In Zadar, discover the Roman and Venetian heritage of the old town, stroll along the waterfront promenade, and enjoy modern installations such as the Sea Organ and Sun Salutation.

The drive to Plitvice is never demanding and allows time to stop along the way for walks, viewpoints or a leisurely lunch. A full day at the lakes reveals a remarkable series of turquoise pools, waterfalls and wooden walkways set within dense forest, perfect for exploring on foot or with gentle walks that suit all fitness levels – a true highlight of any visit to Croatia.

From Plitvice, the route leads south to Omis via the historic towns of Knin and Sinj, combining inland landscapes with rich heritage. The route ends in Omiš, set between the mountains and the sea at the mouth of the Cetina Valley. Those feeling active can enjoy rafting or the exhilarating zip-wire experience high above the gorge, while others may prefer a swim or a relaxed seaside lunch

Finally, return to Split for your departure, reflecting on a journey that has combined cultural towns, national parks, and the best of Croatia’s Adriatic coast. For those wishing to extend the holiday, a few nights on a nearby island such as Brač provide a peaceful seaside conclusion. Well balanced, unhurried and easily adapted, this central Croatia fly-drive offers a rewarding blend of coast, countryside and culture, and can be extended south to Dubrovnik if time allows.

Highlights

Itinerary

Arrive in Split; private transfer directly to your hotel in Split or Trogir. Balance of day for sightseeing on foot through the historic narrow streets. Your first day can be relaxed, giving you time to settle in, enjoy local cafés, and explore at your own pace.

Spend a full day exploring Split or nearby Trogir, both offering rich history, charming old towns, and bustling waterfronts. In Split, wander the Diocletian’s Palace, stroll the Riva promenade, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of this lively city. Trogir, a UNESCO-listed town, is perfect for wandering its narrow streets, admiring Romanesque and Renaissance architecture, and sampling fresh seafood in small harbour-side restaurants.

Pick up hire car and drive north along the coast, stopping at Sibenik, an elegant town with historic stone streets and the impressive Cathedral of St James. Continue to Krka National Park, where cascading waterfalls and serene walking paths provide a perfect break from the road. In the late afternoon, arrive in Zadar, an ancient city with a mix of Roman ruins, Venetian architecture, and modern installations such as the Sea Organ. Enjoy a relaxed evening dining along the waterfront and watching the sunset.

** If you would like more time for activities and/or relaxing at the coast then we recommend adding an extra night in Zadar. This allows you to spend more time visiting the historic old town of Zadar and its market and enjoy a little cafe culture. Whilst here you may also like to visit the nearby seaside town of Nin, Pag Island, Lake Vrana or any of the nearby islands such as Dugi Otok or the Kornati Islands National Park.

After a quick visit to the delightful small town of Nin, leave the coast behind and head inland to Plitvice Lakes National Park, one of Europe’s most beautiful natural reserves. Spend two nights here, giving plenty of time to explore the park’s network of turquoise lakes, dramatic waterfalls, and forested trails. Gentle walks and boat rides across the lakes make it easy to appreciate the stunning scenery. Evenings are perfect for sampling local cuisine in nearby villages, where small family-run restaurants offer hearty dishes in a peaceful setting. We recommend pre-booking your tickets to ensure entry at a time of your choosing; these can be included as part of your holiday.

Depart Plitvice for the Dalmatian coast, travelling via Knin and Sinj, towns steeped in history with fortresses, churches, and interesting local markets. Continue to Omis, a charming town at the mouth of the Cetina River.

Omis is a charming town at the mouth of the Cetina River. Here, adventure meets history: you can take a rafting trip along the Cetina River, hike to the old Starigrad Fortress for panoramic views, or experience the multi-zip-wire course above the canyon. The coastal scenery and narrow streets of Omis offer a relaxing and scenic base for your two nights. Nearby options also include the Biokovo Nature Park and the SkyWalk near Makarska.

After breakfast, return to Split for your flight home. If your schedule allows, enjoy a last stroll along the Riva or a coffee overlooking the Adriatic before dropping off your hire car.

Optional Island Extension:
If you have additional time, consider a short drive and ferry hop to one of the nearby islands, such as Brač, for a couple of nights. Enjoy crystal-clear waters, traditional villages, quiet beaches, and the chance to sample local olive oils and wines. The island stay can be added before returning to Split, making for a perfectly balanced mix of coast, islands, and inland landscapes.
