Summary
With short, daily flights all year round Ljubljana is a great city break location. A compact, traffic-free centre, lots of great food & events.
Activity code: SLCB01
Duration: 3 nights
Ljubljana is one of the smallest capital cities in one of the smallest countries; often described as a smaller Prague without the hordes of tourists. Slovenia’s largest city and political, economic and cultural centre is a typical Central European city with visible similarities to Vienna and Prague but it is also a green city with plenty of parks and woods and progressive eco credentials. In our opinion it is a delightful place for a short break destination - it has a wonderful castle dominating the skyline and the cathedral and other impressive buildings are in the heart of the (traffic-free) historic old town.
Why visit Ljubljana?
Ljubljana was the European Capital of Culture in the 1990s and it is still teeming with cultural life as it is home to numerous theatres, museums and galleries, and boasts one of the oldest philharmonic orchestras in the world. For the present day folk of Ljubljana culture is a way of living and thinking and is very much a part of everyday life. Over 10,000 cultural events take place in the city every year, among which there are 10 international festivals. Above all it is one of the most idyllic urban areas in Europe and when the weather is good, Ljubljana locals like to spend their afternoons in the numerous cafes on the river banks.
The mediaeval castle overlooking the Old Town has an ideal elevated position for scenic views of the city and surroundings. The Tower is open for visitors and hosts a small virtual tour of the city but even reaching the Castle by either funicular, car or on foot will guarantee beautiful views. Cruises on the Ljubljanica river are also increasingly popular. A five minute walk away from the Old Town, you will find the largest park in Ljubljana, the Tivoli; the park begins at Prešern square and at Cekin Castle, a classical building in the middle of the park, is the National Museum of Contemporary History.
A great value city break as prices are broadly similar throughout the year.
