About Trebinje
Trebinje, the southernmost city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, sits just 28 km from Dubrovnik across the hills in Croatia. Blessed with a mild climate and abundant sunshine, Trebinje’s old town remains largely intact, having escaped significant damage during the wars, making it a delightful place to explore. Its compact historic centre, known as Kastel, grew from a former handicraft and trade hub on the banks of the Trebišnjica River. Along the river, historic mills and charming waterfronts evoke the town’s connection to nature and its rich past.
The town offers a fascinating mix of architecture and culture. Notable buildings include the Orthodox Cathedral, the late 19th-century Catholic Cathedral, and the Osman Pasha Mosque, dating from the early 18th century. Perched above the town, the Hercegovacka Gracanica monastery is an impressive landmark visible from many points, built to house the remains of the famous local poet Jovan Ducic. Trebinje is also the starting point for the region’s celebrated Wine Road, where local vineyards, including those of Tvrdos Monastery, produce traditional wines such as Vranac, accompanied by fresh cheese and olive oil tastings.
Trebinje is an ideal stopover or base for exploring southern Bosnia & Herzegovina, offering a serene, historic, and culturally rich experience, just a short drive from the Adriatic coast.
Nearby, a number of historical and spiritual sites make excellent day trips. Tvrdos Monastery, dating from the 13th century, is a cultural and spiritual centre with connections to medieval scriptural collections. St Vasilije of Ostrog’s birthplace at Mrkonjici, Duzi Monastery, St Apostles Peter & Paul’s Monastery, and Paul’s Cave offer glimpses into the religious heritage of the area. The 13th-century Zavala Monastery at the foot of Mount Ostrog is another testament to the deep Christian roots in the region. The surrounding countryside, with rolling hills, river valleys, and ancient stone bridges, is perfect for gentle exploration, hiking, or enjoying the peaceful landscapes of Herzegovina.
We look forward to being of service.
