About Rethymnon
Along with the characterful old town, with its Venetian “Fortezza” (fortress), scenic harbour, and a multitude of tavernas, cafes and restaurants, Rethymnon has one of Crete's most magnificent sandy beaches, which stretches almost as far as the eye can see. In fact between Rethymnon and the town of Prines there are no less than eight Blue Flag beaches.
There's a lot to see here: museums, archaeological sites, monasteries, churches, and Venetian and Turkish monuments. As Rethymnon is centrally positioned and has a decent bus service you could visit virtually all of Crete on days out.
For a more off-the-beaten-track feel Prines is only 6 kilometres from Rethymnon. It's an old Cretan village with narrow, winding alleyways and traditional houses, surrounded by olive groves. There is a lovely 13th century church to explore and the village has several mini markets, a cafe, taverna and bar.
Another picturesque village is Adele with narrow streets, picturesque houses and historical churches.
