About Bohinj
Bohinj – Tranquillity in the Julian Alps
Nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps at the southern edge of Triglav National Park, Bohinj and its lake offer a quieter, yet equally scenic alternative to Lake Bled. The region encompasses the Nomenj and Bohinj Valleys, the Poljuka and Jelovica Plateaux, and Vogel Mountain, accessible by cable car, making it a superb destination for lovers of nature and outdoor pursuits.
Beyond the serene lake and the small town of Ribčev Laz, highlights include the Savica Waterfalls, high-altitude walking trails atop Mount Vogel, and the Bohinj railway. Springtime brings a dazzling display of local flora, particularly in May and June, ideal for botanists and photographers alike.
Outdoor activities abound, from hiking, cycling, horse riding, rafting, kayaking, paragliding, and climbing, to sailing on the lake with an electric boat or exploring the valleys on an e-bike.
Local Food & Specialities
Bohinj is famed for Mohant cheese, a soft, yellow cow’s-milk cheese with a strong aroma and spicy flavour, produced in the traditional way and bearing European destination of origin status. Trout, sausages, venison, and Zganci (a traditional cornmeal dish) are also local delights. Look for the “FROM BOHINJ” label to guarantee geographical origin and high quality.
Sustainable Tourism
Bohinj has been recognised by EDEN – European Destinations of Excellence – as a model for sustainable tourism, where economic development is carefully balanced with social, cultural, and environmental preservation.
We look forward to being of service.
