High Atlas Mountains

The High Atlas Mountains are dominated by some of North Africa's highest peaks which tower above the Berber villages, providing a backdrop for a peaceful holiday at one of our chosen small hotels and kasbahs.

To the south of Marrakech we recommend basing yourself in Ouirgane or nearby Marigha, these villages are situated in the dramatic foothills of the High Atlas Mountains and are surrounded by almond blossom in early spring and are just an hour's drive from Marrakech. These two places are beautiful, relaxing and offer some lovely day hikes, suitable for all. If you were wanting to do some more challenging walking then head up the valley leading from the market town of Asni to the small village of Imlil. Surrounded, except for the narrow valley itself, by the imposing majesty of the High Atlas, and the Toubkal Massif in particular, Imlil is the perfect starting point for all trekking in this area. The accommodation we offer here, such as the Douar Samra, are worthy recipients of praise on environmental and conservation grounds. We recommend a stay in Imlil as a more luxurious start and/or finish to any hiking itinerary.

To the north of Marrakech is Demnate which is a lesser-visited location in which to learn more of the Berber culture; you can also visit many natural Geoparc sites in the M'Goun area on guided day hikes and, of course, the incredible waterfalls at Ouzoud.

A little further away from Marrakech, at the western edge of the High Atlas, not too far from the Atlantic, just north of Agadir, is Immouzer, surrounded by magnificent waterfalls. This location is ideal for walking, bird watching, fossil hunting or merely putting your feet up by the pool. The journey to the hotel passes through the aptly named ‘Paradise Valley’ dotted with olive and almond trees. Finally, if you were looking for a more active option then you may be interested in Oukaimeden which is Morocco's highest ski resort (running from December to April), boasting impressive views across the High Atlas range from its 3000m ski-lift.
