Niksic

Niksic, nestled in the Zeta River valley, is Montenegro’s second-largest city, framed by the sunny peaks of surrounding mountains. Its long history stretches back to Roman times and includes periods under the Goths, Slavs, and Ottomans. A large section of the city walls and fortress has been restored, while a street just inside the walls is said to have changed very little since the 16th century.

The city is flanked by three lakes—Krupac, Slano, and Liverovici—which become popular day-trip and holiday destinations during the summer months. In the heart of Niksic stands the monumental Saborna Church, dedicated to Saint Vasilije, surrounded by a peaceful park. Niksic is also known for producing the famous Niksicko beer.

The natural beauty of the area is showcased along the river valley, with highlights such as a historic stone bridge and the Forest Park of Trebjesa. The park, located on the edge of the city, is more than a hill covered in conifers; it is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, walkers, and athletes, offering clean air and panoramic views—it is affectionately known as the “lungs of the town.”

Ostrog Monastery

Between Podgorica and Niksic, the Ostrog Monastery is one of Montenegro’s most revered pilgrimage sites. Built into a sheer cliff overlooking the Bjelopavlicka Plain, the monastery was founded in the 17th century by Archbishop Vasilije, who was later canonised as a miracle-performing saint. The monastery was reconstructed in the 1920s after a fire, though the small cave churches survived. These include the Church of the Entrance of the Holy Mother of God, adorned with late 17th-century frescoes, and the Church of the Holy Cross in the upper monastery, painted by the master Radul, who adapted his work to the natural contours of the rock.

Ostrog Monastery attracts pilgrims from across the Balkans and beyond, embracing Orthodox, Catholic, and Muslim visitors alike. It is widely believed that the relics of St. Vasilije of Ostrog possess miraculous properties, with pilgrims often reporting healing or relief from their troubles after praying before them.
