About Montenegro
The Republic of Montenegro, which gained independence in 2006, is a captivating country in South-eastern Europe, bordered by Croatia, Albania, and Serbia. Despite its small size, Montenegro is a land of extraordinary contrasts: an Adriatic coastline dotted with medieval towns, hidden coves, and turquoise waters, set against a backdrop of towering mountains, dense forests, and rugged highlands. Its native name, Crna Gora, translates as “Black Mountain,” a fitting description of the dramatic peaks and thick woodlands that dominate much of the interior. Mount Durmitor, rising to 2,522 metres, exemplifies the country’s mountainous grandeur, while the highlands along the borders with Kosovo and Albania rank among Europe’s most strikingly rugged terrains.
Montenegro is renowned for its warm hospitality and unspoiled beauty, making it an ideal destination for tailor-made holidays. The country’s diverse landscapes allow visitors to enjoy a mix of coastal charm, cultural heritage, and outdoor adventure, even on a short fly-drive itinerary. Dubrovnik in Croatia is a popular gateway to Montenegro, particularly for exploring the stunning Bay of Kotor and the Budva Riviera. Alternatively, flights now land directly in Tivat, close to Budva, or visitors can take the scenic rail journey from Belgrade through Podgorica down to the Adriatic coast.
The country is rich in history, religion, and architecture. From magnificent monasteries such as Morača, Sveta Trojica, Đurđevi stupovi, and the world-famous Ostrog, to historic churches like St. Trifun Cathedral and Our Lady of the Rocks in Kotor Bay, Montenegro is full of spiritual and cultural treasures. Fortified towns and coastal cities—Budva, Kotor, Perast, Bar, and Ulcinj—offer a heady mix of Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture, reflecting centuries of diverse influence. The medieval city of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains one of the most impressive examples of Montenegro’s coastal heritage, with winding streets, imposing walls, and lively squares.
Whether exploring the mountains, wandering historic towns, sailing the Adriatic, or sampling the local cuisine and wines, Montenegro offers a richly rewarding journey through a land still waiting to be rediscovered.
