Podgorica

The capital of one of Europe’s newest nations, Podgorica occupies a central position in Montenegro, at the crossroads between the coast and the mountains. Its mild climate, fertile vineyards, and abundance of sunny days give the city warm summers and gentle winters.

The natural beauty of Podgorica is framed by the Morača and Ribnica rivers, which intersect the town from north to south and east to west. Its location makes it a unique base for exploring the country: the Adriatic coast is just 50 km away, and the nearest ski centre only 70 km, making it entirely possible to swim in the sea and ski on the same day. The city itself is modern and functional, with a growing selection of cultural sites, cafes, and restaurants, reflecting the dynamic character of Montenegro’s capital.

Ostrog Monastery

Situated between Podgorica and Niksic, the Ostrog Monastery is a must-see for travellers exploring central Montenegro. Built into a sheer cliff overlooking the Bjelopavlicka Plain, the monastery was founded in the 17th century by Archbishop Vasilije, who was later canonised as a miracle-performing saint. Reconstructed in the 1920s after a fire, the small cave churches survived and remain the main attraction today. These include the Church of the Entrance of the Holy Mother of God, decorated with late 17th-century frescoes, and the Church of the Holy Cross in the upper monastery, painted by the master Radul, adapted to the natural contours of the rock.

Ostrog Monastery is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Balkans, attracting Orthodox, Catholic, and Muslim believers. It is widely regarded as miraculous, and pilgrims often report healing or relief from their troubles after praying before the relics of St. Vasilije.
