About Lake Skadar National Park

Situated in the south-east of Montenegro and surrounded by mountains, Lake Skadar is one of the largest lakes in Europe, with its eastern shores extending into Albania. Until recently, the area remained largely off the beaten track. The Skadarsko Jezero National Park is not only a place of outstanding natural beauty, but it is also listed under the RAMSAR Convention as a Wetland of International Importance and ranks among Europe’s largest bird reserves.

The lake’s water levels and surface area fluctuate throughout the year as rivers feeding it rise and fall, yet the water remains clean and fresh, continuously supplied by underground springs, some of which lie below sea level. The warm waters are ideal for swimming, and the numerous beaches provide perfect spots for relaxation and sunbathing. One of the most popular beaches is in Murici, near the Albanian border, offering spectacular views across the lake.

Two charming towns, Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića, sit on the lake’s shores, both noted for their historic architecture. Virpazar serves as the main harbour for lake excursions and hosts the National Park Visitor Centre, making it an excellent base for exploration. The surrounding hinterland, particularly the Crmnica region, is famed for producing some of the best wines in Montenegro, while the lake itself is rich in carp, satisfying lovers of both food and fishing.

Lake Skadar is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts. It hosts over 280 bird species, including endangered species such as the Dalmatian Pelican and Pygmy Cormorant, and is home to more than 50 species of fish, with carp and bleak being the most common. Numerous monasteries are scattered across the islands of the lake, the oldest being Starčevo, founded in the 14th century by the ascetic Makarije, after whom the island Starčeva Gorica is named.

The Skadar Lake basin is rich in cultural and historical sites, including archaeological remains, monastery complexes, and fortifications. Highlights include the mediaeval fortified town of Zabljak Crnojevica, the old town of Rijeka Crnojević, and villages such as Godinje and Ostros, where visitors can enjoy local wines, stroll among stone houses, and admire the serene lake vistas, including the historic prison island of Grmozur.
